How much freedom does the mother cat need?

Is it wise to keep your cat locked in a room with her kittens (5 days old) or will she be needing more freedom? (I have 2 Jack russels and do not want them to go and interfere with them). I do give her lots of attention and let her walk around when I get home from work until she wants to go back to her litter. Any advice?
