How much freedom does the mother cat need?

Freedom
nats.1983 asked:

Is it wise to keep your cat locked in a room with her kittens (5 days old) or will she be needing more freedom? (I have 2 Jack russels and do not want them to go and interfere with them). I do give her lots of attention and let her walk around when I get home from work until she wants to go back to her litter. Any advice?

Cats are great mothers. She knows what she needs and when she needs it so just follow her lead. There will be times when she needs a break and times when she needs her kittens to be close. I would not lock her up. She might not feel safe there and might move her kittens. Better to put up a doggy gate and seperate the cats and dogs that way.

I beleive that you are doing exactly waht needs to be done to keep momma cat and her kittens safe and stress-free. Moreover, you are giving momma cat several “breaks” during the day with time just with you and to roam on her own around the house. Good job!
